Top British DJ Jailed For 4 Years In Dubai
February 19, 2008
A Dubai court sentenced top British DJ Raymond Bingham, better known as Grooverider, to four years in jail today. In November police arrested him after finding he was carrying cannabis and pornographic DVDs into the country.
Grooverider, a BBC Radio 1 DJ, was detained at Dubai airport on November 23, hours before he was due to play a sold-out show at The Lodge.
Drugs and pornographic material are strictly banned in the UAE. Under UAE law, drug trafficking carries a sentence ranging from four years jail to death, though executions are rare.
Ram Nath, the music promoter who organised the show, said that he warned Grooverider of the strict laws of the country before his departure from London. “I sent a fax to him explaining all of our laws, including what he could and could not bring into the country.â€
Mr BBI Says: This story made me laugh because a jackass like Grooverider thinks he’s are above the law. There are too many people who flout the laws here in the UK when it comes to drugs.
He no doubt thought the worst that would happen to him would have been deportation. Silly man, the authorities in countries like the UAE use guys like him to set an example of what will happen to you when you break their laws.
