Google Toolbar Update

October 20, 2006

Yesterday I got a notification that the Google Toolbar I had installed had updated. I thought OK fair enough it won’t be that much different from previous versions but yet again I was wrong. I hate being wrong. I like to be right. :-)

Anyway the toolbar update.

It had various new features including Bookmarks, Enhanced Search Box, Add buttons and a few more. To start with I don’t like updating anything unless I have to. If I am happy using something I normally don’t want it changed. I hate new buttons being added, ones I use being replaced and I especially hate the layout being changed. I’m boring. I like things to be as they are until I want them changed or moved.

The update pissed the whole thing about, added crap I didn’t want and removed stuff I use.

I went into the settings and started to see new additions I didn’t like the look of. I read on a few forums other people had notice different behaviour from the toolbar. It now wanted to connect to the internet even when the browser wasn’t open. Strange. Why would a browser toolbar need to access the internet when the browser isn’t even open? Smells fishy to me.

As one forum poster said, if the toolbar had any other company name on it other then Google people would be crying spyware, trojan and a number of other accusations.

The answer was simple. Uninstall it. So that’s what I did. I missed it for all of half an hour.
